Head-canon: Edmund as the 'Father of Wolves':
It is a sad -but largely unacknowledged by much of the Narnian Army and by Narnia's High King (although not her Just King)-truth that far too many creatures only served Jadis out of fear for the lives of their families. It is also a little known truth that Narnia's Just King spares those who have served her out of this fear and has begun to form his own detachment of the Narnian Army, made up of these creatures, a detatchment that many who do know about belittle as being the 'Army of Traitors' which Edmund sighs at but has come to accept as the people's opinion. It is when these whisper are heard in the royal court that Edmund is displeased (If he was more reliant on his brother to set all things to rights, Edmund might have taken this matter to Peter, but the High King had made his early disapproval of Edmund's plans regarding saving even a fraction of the Fell Creatures clear).
So, when Edmund comes upon an ill and dying mother Wolf with four young Pups only days old on a trip though the Western Woods with a small group of his loyal command of soldiers, made up entirely of former members of Jadis' forces who have been pardoned by him and who have sworn themselves to his service, as well as Orieus and Phillip(his ever loyal steed), he takes pity on her and her young ones and he asks kindly if there is anything he can do for the She-Wolf. Her reply is a simple, "Care for my children. Their father is dead and I shall soon join him. Take care of my pups and protect them from all harm, my Lord. Tales of your justice and mercy have spread thoughout the land. In Aslan's Name, I beg of you, Just King, protect my young ones."
He nods and responds, "It will be as you ask, cousin. They will be cared for by me to the best of my ability. I swear it to you, in Aslan's name." The She-Wolf whispers her thanks and then her eyes close for the last time. Edmund says a prayer for her soul then orders a burial in the tradition of the Wolves, while he gathers up the four Pups and wraps them in his fur cloak and places them in a large satchel that Orieus brings him. Then he mounts Phillip and races back to the palace of Cair Paravel and home. Lucy finds them adorable and helps him name them. Susan, too, finds them adorable although she worries about the future for them. Peter disapproves at first but is won over as they grow. With Lucy's and Susan's help he names them Bright Star which he decides to shorten to just Star, Arrow, Arthur, and Gwaine. Star and Arrow are female and Arthur and Gwaine are males.
